Prehistorical Times in Paxos

According to a legend Paxos was created when Poseidon struck Corfu with his trident. This caused the southernmost tip to break off and float away and form a separate island. At sometime later Paxos became his love nest, where he could hide from his jealous wife. No matter if this story holds true or not, the trident of Poseidon still remains the symbol of Paxos. The island of Paxos has a long history of occupation as all the other Ionian islands as well. The main reason for this was the strategic positions of the place as it lies between Italy and Balkans. One other reason is the excellent harbours.
